Creating Ambiance in Your Residential Interior Design and Decorating … No Matter What the Budget!
What Ambiance Really Means
When it comes to interior design and decorating, it’s truly all about the magic and excitement of ambiance. But how many people really understand what ambiance is?
You could look it up in the dictionary—so let’s do that. Ambiance is defined as the mood, character, quality, tone, or atmosphere of an environment. Another definition describes it as “that which surrounds or encompasses.” That’s especially meaningful, because when we create ambiance—no matter the budget—we’re shaping how a space feels.
The Feeling of Ambiance
Consider this: how does it feel to wrap yourself in a nylon windbreaker versus a mink coat? You are the same person in both cases, yet your emotional response changes. The way you carry yourself, speak, and move shifts. Your demeanor expands. That shift—that feeling—is ambiance.
A Personal Definition of Ambiance
I’ve taken this idea a step further and created my own definition:
Ambiance is the intangible element of an interior that touches the heart, soul, mind, and emotions. It is visually appealing, intellectually stimulating, emotionally satisfying, and tactilely enriching for both the occupants and their guests.
Ambiance as Calm and Excitement
The same magic that creates excitement can also inspire calm. Ambiance can do several things at once—it provides a haven while also creating a backdrop that allows the occupants and their possessions to shine as the true gems of the space.
Your Home as a Reflection of You
Think of photography. When you have a family portrait taken, a skilled photographer selects a backdrop that brings out your very best. In the same way, your home should highlight you. Like fine jewelry, you are the gem—the ruby, the diamond—and your environment should enhance your character, your depth, and your unique personality. After all, there is no one else exactly like you.
Why Ambiance Matters
So why is ambiance so important?
Quite simply, without ambiance, you’re left with just a “look.” And a look, by itself, often feels superficial. It doesn’t capture the depth of who you are. It doesn’t express the richness of your individuality.
The Pitfalls of Trends
This leads to an important question: why do so few people truly achieve ambiance in their homes?
One reason is the tendency to follow trends and fads. Trends come and go, and it’s easy to become stuck in a kind of “time warp” when a space is designed around what’s currently popular. Over time, that look can feel dated—like a time capsule.
Much of what is promoted in the furniture, furnishings, and even fashion industries is designed to encourage constant change. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but it can create a lingering sense of dissatisfaction—an urge to keep updating, rather than to create something lasting and meaningful.
Staying True to Yourself
Yet we all know there are certain styles, colors, and forms that truly suit us. And if those don’t align with current trends, does that make them any less valid? Of course not. There is more than enough diversity in the world for individual expression to thrive.
Just look at nature. Across all four seasons—spring, summer, fall, and winter—there is incredible beauty and variety. But do we ever hear that certain colors in nature are “out of style”? Do red roses go in and out of fashion? Of course not. Their beauty is timeless.
Knowing Yourself First
And yet, many people try to recreate what they’ve seen in magazines without fully considering important questions: Does this reflect my personality? Does it suit my geographic location? Does it harmonize with my home’s architecture?
This is why knowing yourself is the essential first step. True ambiance begins there.
